EEXI AND CII: DUAL REGULATIONS FOR REDUCING SHIPS’ CARBON IMPACT
- The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established decarbonization targets for the shipping industry.
- By 2030, the IMO aims to reduce vessels’ carbon emissions per transport work by at least 40%, and targets a 70% reduction for 2050.
- These goals must be met in parallel with a reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% across the sector.
- To accomplish this, the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) has passed regulations to minimize the marine sector’s carbon emissions and environmental impact by creating the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII).
- The EEXI is a framework for determining the energy efficiency of in-service vessels over 400 gross tonnage; EEXI requires ship operators to assess their ships’ energy consumption and CO2 emissions against specific requirements for energy efficiency for each vessel type.
- EEXI calculations describe a vessel’s CO2 emissions and determine standardized CO2 emissions related to installed engine power, transport capacity and ship speed.
- CII is calculated as the ratio of the total mass of CO2 emitted to the total transport work undertaken in a given calendar year; a vessel’s performance rating is determined by comparing a ship’s operational carbon intensity performance with the average performance of others ships of the same type.
